Perineal and Pelvic Rehabilitation in Montreal and on the South Shore

Doctors often recommend perineal and pelvic rehabilitation following certain surgeries. It is a physiotherapy specialization that treats urinary, gynecological and anorectal problems in men and women.

Prostate removal in the case of a cancer, for example, can lead to urinary problems due to a weakening of the urethral sphincter caused by procedure. In such a case, you might need to seek perineal rehabilitation in Montreal. The treatment focuses on strengthening the pelvic floor, which in turn allows for a better control of the urethral sphincter, thus diminishing risks of incontinence.

Recovery from a hysterectomy can also require the involvement of a physiotherapist. It is a surgery that can sometimes cause genital prolapse (the descent of an organ into the vagina), which can be treated through pelvic rehabilitation at our South Shore or Montreal clinic.

In addition to the previous examples, perineal and pelvic rehabilitation can help relieve the following issues:

  • Urinary incontinence (stress, urgency or mixed)
  • Urinary urgency
  • Male sexual dysfunction (erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation)
  • Genital pain
  • Pelvic prolapse (descent of organs) and installation of pessaries
  • Pregnancy monitoring (before, during and after)
  • Diastase of the rectus abdominis
  • Strengthening of the pelvic floor (EPI-NO)
  • Fecal incontinence and / or gas
  • Fecal urgency
  • Constipation / diarrhea
  • Post-surgery rehabilitation (e.g. prostatectomy)
  • Other urinary or anorectal problems
